How to Assess a Website Before Investing in SEO

When choosing a website for a guest post, partnership or backlink, it is tempting to reduce the decision to one score. A high number looks reassuring; a low one can seem like an immediate reason to walk away. But SEO metrics are estimates, not verdicts. Understanding what they measure—and checking the site itself—can help businesses spend their marketing budget more wisely.

    Why SEO scores disagree

Domain Authority (DA), developed by Moz, and Domain Rating (DR), developed by Ahrefs, both summarise aspects of a website’s backlink profile. They are not the same measurement, however, and neither is a Google ranking factor. Each provider uses its own data, calculations and scale, so two scores for the same domain can differ without either tool being broken.

One reason is that SEO platforms do not necessarily discover or index the same links. A link that appears in one tool’s database may be missing from another, while newly published or removed links can take time to show up. The services also assess link quality and authority differently. Their scores are proprietary estimates, not direct measurements of a site’s ability to rank.

The figures can also be affected by the site’s structure and history. A domain may have acquired links to one section but little activity elsewhere. A redesign, migration, change in ownership or burst of low-quality links can make the profile harder to interpret. Before drawing conclusions, check that you are comparing the same domain format, including whether the tool is showing a subdomain or the root domain.

For a closer explanation of DA and DR differences and how to check both, it helps to look beyond the headline numbers and understand how each tool presents its data.

Use scores as a starting point

When screening a potential website, compare DA and DR as directional indicators. A sizeable gap between them is a prompt to investigate, not proof of manipulation. Look at the referring domains behind each score: are there links from relevant, credible sites, or does the profile rely on a small number of questionable sources? Check whether links point to useful pages and whether the site appears to attract genuine coverage.

Then assess the website as a reader would. Is it regularly publishing original material? Do its articles have a clear subject and audience? Are there signs of real engagement, such as thoughtful comments, active social channels or mentions from related organisations? These signals can provide context that a single authority score cannot.

Relevance matters, too. A modestly rated site that serves the right audience may be more valuable to a business than a much higher-scoring site with no connection to its products or expertise. Consider the proposed article, where it will sit on the site, whether the link makes sense for readers, and whether the publisher has a clear editorial standard. A strong score cannot compensate for an irrelevant placement or thin content.

    Build a repeatable review process

For consistency, use the same checklist for every opportunity:

    • Confirm the domain. Make sure the metrics refer to the exact website and version you are considering.
    • Compare more than one metric. Record DA and DR, but treat them as estimates rather than a pass-or-fail threshold.
    • Inspect the link profile. Review referring domains, their relevance and the pages receiving links.
    • Review the site’s content. Look for recent, useful publishing and a clear audience.
    • Check the proposed placement. Consider the article topic, link context and likely value to readers.

Keeping a simple spreadsheet with the scores, observations and date checked makes later comparisons easier. Metrics change as tools update their databases, so recording when you reviewed a site helps explain differences in future reports. Avoid setting a universal minimum score without considering your sector, budget and campaign goals.

When it makes sense to bring in help

Small teams may not have the time to assess every prospect, prepare content and manage outreach. A freelancer can help with research, writing, design or technical tasks, but the assignment needs a clear brief. Set out the audience, required checks, format, number of sites to review and what counts as a completed deliverable. Agreeing on freelance scope and deliverables before work begins reduces the chance of paying for a report that answers the wrong question.

Businesses weighing different ways to hire can compare fixed-price freelancers and bidding platforms before choosing a model. For defined work, a fixed price can make costs easier to plan. Osdire, for example, lists services across categories including marketing, writing and technology, with flat pricing and payment held while an order is in progress until the buyer approves the delivery. Whatever the platform, specify the evidence you expect and how revisions will be handled.

    Make the decision in context

DA and DR are useful for sorting a long list, but they should not decide a campaign on their own. Combine them with a review of backlink quality, topical relevance, editorial standards and audience fit. If the two scores disagree, investigate why; do not simply choose the higher one. A documented process—and a well-defined brief when work is delegated—makes SEO decisions clearer, more consistent and easier to justify.
